Retirement Benefits For Officers/Firefighters Modified

More than an hour was spent by the Ft. Smith Board of Directors at Tuesday's meeting deba- ting the issue of a resolution for the modification of retirement benefits for police and fire- fighters.  A resolution was passed in a 5-2 vote.  The two votes against it were directors George Catsavis and Don Hutchings.

According to Police Sargent Daniel Grubbs, officers and firefighters will now have to work at least three years longer in order to receive the same benefits.  The City will save $447,534 in 2016 as a result of the change.  It will see an annual savings of $516,297 by the year 2026.
