Former Van Buren Teacher Convicted

Thursday Denan Cagle, a former Van Buren teacher, was convicted of harassment and order- ed to pay a $400 fine.  Cagle was also given a 30-day suspended sentence.  According to authorities, originally she faced a charge of third-degree battery.

Cagle, a former science teacher at Northridge Middle School, was accused of slapping a student in the face in November of last year.  Then, she was accused of slapping a 13 year-old on the arm on January 28 of this year.  Cagle was fired by the Van Buren School District on April 14.

She will have to enroll in anger management and was also ordered to have no contact with one of the students that said she hit him, officials said.
