Back in March during a study session, Ft. Smith Board of Directors had requested a change in the budgeting policy. Currently, the previous year's ending balance is used to help balance the present year's budget. Board members voted on May 19, in a 4-2 vote, to adopt a new budgeting policy, which will be a major change. Mayor Sandy Sanders lobbied against it.
Sanders later vetoed the vote. In an email to the directors, he explained his motives. San- ders described the current procedure as "providing a conservative and responsible balanced budget." This is Sanders' second veto since taking office in 2011.
