Recently in Ft. Smith, testing was done on the City's north side of the underground sewer systems. The utility department crews are specifically looking for any holes or erosion that may have happened over the past year. They do this by blasting smoke thru the system. The crews are looking for smoke coming out of the ground, which would indicate a main line break in that part of the sewer system or a clean out was needed.
Although the theatrical smoke poses no danger to residents, it can give them a scare. A- ccording to the Fire Department, the smoke can come up under a sink, thru a sink and the toilet causing it to appear that the house is on fire. In the coming weeks it is being planned by the City to do similar testing in other areas of Ft. Smith.
