During a Ft. Smith School Board meeting in June, a motion was passed to ban the Southside High School's song and mascot. However, Joey McCutchen, a Ft. Smith attorney, says the law was violated by the School Board due to the public not being given advance notice of the banning. According to McCutchen, the only notice sent out for that meeting was the one re- garding the evaluation of the Superintendent.
The Ft. Smith School District issued this statement, "We do not believe that the school board has any legal exposure regarding the way that the meeting was conducted." The Board is scheduled to make its final vote on July 27. The meeting will be open to the pub- lic.
