On July 14, a ribbon-cutting ceremony was held for the opening of the stretch of Interstate 549 that runs thru Chaffee Crossing. Among those who attended were Governor Asa Hutch- inson, state and local leaders, as well as Arkansas Highway Department representatives.
It is 6.5 miles long and will eventually be called I-49. U.S. 71 in southern Ft. Smith and Se- bastian County are connected to Arkansas 22 in Barling by this $130 million project. Upon completion, I-49 will cover 1700 miles between New Orleans and Winnipeg, Canada. 315 miles of that is in Arkansas.
