The expansion and renovation of five local schools, at the cost of $70 million, was approved by the Ft. Smith School Board to help fund much needed projects. Also, in September of this year, voters will be asked to approve a millage increase.
School Board President Dr. Deanie Mehl said the projects cannot be done without the increa- se. She said they could be accomplished with an increase of three mills. The property tax on a $100,000 home would increase by $60 per year. There hasn't been an increase since 1987.
According to Mehl, there is some overcrowding in the junior high and high schools. How- ever, she feels that renovation is the main issue. Top priority, Mehl said, will be the con- struction of tornado shelters at both high schools. The second would be the renovation at Southside and Ramsey.
