Poteau Rodeo Cancelled

Due to damage that occurred during the tornado on May 25, the Poteau rodeo has been cancelled.  The event was scheduled for July 16th and 17th.  An EF2 tornado came through Poteau at 5:48 p.m. on the 25th with estimated peak wind speeds between 110 and 120 mph.

It caused extensive damage to 200 feet of fencing and buildings at the arena. Poteau's Roundup Club chairman, Bob Oliver, said they have cleaned up a lot, but are not able to have the arena ready in time for the rodeo.

According to a National Weather Service damage survey summary, the path of the tornado was 15.5 miles and at least 1,000 yards wide.
