There are twenty-three existing tornado shelters on elementary and Jr. High campuses in Ft. Smith. There are none at Northside and Southside High Schools. The cost to build them for the high schools would be $6.4 million. It is the hope of school officials that federal funds can be obtained to pay for the shelters.
75% of the cost of the existing ones was taken care of by funds from the Federal Emergency Management Agency. According to Benny Gooden, District Superintendent, the shelters the schools have now are used for a variety of indoor activities.
